“The key is to travel outside of peak season when most are not able to,” says Szeto. If your schedule allows you to book last minute, call your local travel agencies or look online for vacations a week or two before you hope to travel. You can also save money by departing and returning mid-week since most people want to fly on weekends.

“For even further discounts, it pays to be flexible about your departure city. Even if this means purchasing a connecting flight to the cheapest departure city, it often works out cheaper to fly into a city during non-Spring Break and depart from there. I am surprised at how few people actually do this. I have noticed $300 to $400 price differences during the same time, to the same resort, between Montreal and Toronto departures. Hop on Via Rail, drive or catch a cheap flight, and the vacation is now half price.”

Bruce Lacroix, dad of two, Nelson, B.C.
