Backyard Astronomy

A crafty exercise to better understand the night sky and the wonder of the universe, this one comes straight from NASA.

Head to the NASA website (nasa.gov) to download and print patterns for the 16 constellations. Take 16 film canisters (if you’ve gone digital, visit your local photography store and ask for cast-offs from the professionals), label each with a different constellation name, then affix the corresponding pattern to the bottom of each canister. Using a thumb tack, punch a small hole for each star, then remove the pattern. When you look through the open end, you should now see a miniature version of the constellation. Memorize, then find each one in the night sky.
