Reader tips for raising kids the Baby-Led Weaning way

Liliana Elves, mom of one girl, came to BLW through online forums and found it too easy to try anything else. She started her daughter at seven months with sliced baked sweet potatoes.

ON COOKING “From the beginning, our baby ate what we ate, just no salt. For fruit, I halved and baked firm fruits.”

DEALING WITH FAMILY “My mother-in-law called regularly from three months to find out why we hadn’t started rice cereal, formula, etc. She was silent when she later saw him snacking on lamb chops.”

BEST SNACKS “Rice cakes, bananas, mango slices, steamed asparagus tops, a ripe peach to make it through grocery shopping.”

FAVOURITE MEALS “Curry, noodles, spinach pies, Mediterranean pizza, old cheddar, meatballs, falafel, toast soldiers with hummus.”

ON GETTING STARTED “I always worried about choking, but you quickly figure out that gagging is different then choking. We never had a problem.”

SANITY-SAVING TIP “Nurse your baby before meals, so that he doesn’t get frustrated and so that meals are relaxing for you both. And take a bite out of the apple to get it started before you give it to her.”
