Perception

When in doubt, delegate and don’t sweat the small stuff. Research has shown that what brings sustained happiness to humans are not our acquisitions or achievements, but our connections. I appreciate that this may not apply to your 8-year-old wanting the latest Hannah Montana, but when thoughts of planning the “perfect” holiday, meeting that work deadline or keeping the in-laws happy, arise and begin to oppress you, sit for a few minutes, and practice paying attention these thoughts.

If you can distance yourself from your thoughts, you prove that are not your thoughts—you are more than your thoughts. Perhaps you can imagine your thoughts like a waterfall cascading in front of you and you are in a recess or cave behind this waterfall of thoughts, just watching them flow away. Or you can say to yourself, “This is only a thought, it will pass,” and imagine placing it on a leaf that floats away down a river.
