Heinz Ketchup Cake: We Love It!

It’s no secret that as Canadians, one of our favourite condiments is ketchup. Not surprising, since it pairs so nicely with so many things. Hot dogs? Check. Fries? Check. Grilled cheese? Double check. Cake? Ch… Wait a minute… cake?!

Shocking, but true—you can put ketchup in cake! To celebrate 100 years of manufacturing in Canada, Heinz is sharing their Great Canadian Heinz Ketchup Cake recipe, which has been tested and approved by the team here at Canadian Family. (Yes, taste testing is an important part of our jobs!) But don’t just take our word for it, try it yourself!

You’ll need:
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp each ground nutmeg and ginger
1/2 cup Heinz Tomato Ketchup
1/2 cup water
2 tbsp red food colouring
3/4 cup butter, softened
1 1/2 cups packed dark brown sugar
2 eggs

Frosting:
6 oz brick-style cream cheese, softened
3/4 cup butter, softened
1 tsp vanilla extract
4 cups icing sugar

1. Preheat oven to 350ºF. Grease two 9-inch round cake pans and line the bottoms with parchment paper.

2. Stir the flour with the baking powder, cinnamon, baking soda, nutmeg and ginger into a bowl. Stir the ketchup, water and colouring in a separate bowl. Set aside.

3. Beat the butter and blend in the sugar in a large bowl until smooth. Beat in the eggs. Add the flour mixture and ketchup mixture. Beat on low, scraping down the bowl as needed, until combined. Increase the speed to medium-high and beat for 1 minute. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 30 minutes or until the centre springs back when touched lightly. Cool the cakes for 15 minutes before turning onto a rack to cool completely.

4. Frosting: Beat the cream cheese, butter and vanilla on medium speed for 2 minutes or until smooth. Gradually beat in the sugar on low, scraping the bowl as needed. Beat on high until fluffy. Frost between the cake layers and over the sides and top of cake. Makes 12 servings.

  1. Carrie Anne says:

I’m not a ketchup eater, but my kids are. I should know better than to judge a recipe by it’s ingredients (did I mention a chocolate mouse cake my mom makes made with tofu). I guess I’ll have to give this a try, though my kids won’t believe it’s made with ketchup. Hope it doesn’t taste like ketchup.

  2. Angela says:

My mom use to make tomato soup cake, I am guessing this is somewhat similar. Oh the ways parents hide vegitables…

Luckily my kids like their veggies without disguise.

  3. Dona says:

we tried it and it’s great!

  4. Gayle Bowen says:

  7. I agree with Gayle, it tastes very much like spice cake. It’s superb, but then again, every cake with cream cheese icing tastes delicious! :) Thanks for posting the recipe for all to see!
