Back-to-School: Win a Skip Hop Backpack!

If your babe has outgrown hats with ears, but isn’t at full-grown backpack size yet, these sweet Skip Hop knapsacks are perfect. Yep, they’re adorable, but they’re also just the right size, sturdy and non-toxic, and with well-padded straps, a side pocket with a bottle toggle and zipper pulls that represents each animal’s food source.

And is the insulated snack pouch not brilliant? We’re all about starting the day off with breakfast, but, honestly, it’s hard to always (ever?) make the time for a relaxed, sit-down meal. Taking it to go means our dumpling can eat at his own pace, and be happy en route.

Do you serve breakfast before you get out the door? We want to know if we’re the only ones who find breakfast a challenge.

Leave us a comment below to win one of Skip Hop’s latest Little Kid Backpacks: we’re giving away a Frog, Zebra and Penguin. Let us know if you eat breakfast family style or en route, and what your child eats most often.

And if you’re looking for a portable breakfast recipe that will please even picky eaters, try one of our easy favourites:

Wicked-good Pizza Muffins

Scrambled Egg Cupcakes

Cheesy Ham and Spinach Muffins

Breastfeeding Week Guest Blogger Winner!

Photo by christyscherrer via Flickr (CC)

When we called for guest bloggers for World Breastfeeding Week, we weren’t sure what we’d get. But it was a sweet, touching entry from Lisa Sample Hamilton of Ottawa that won us over.

She’s not a blogger, simply a reader who saw our post and felt she had something to say.

Enjoy her guest post below, and share your breastfeeding thoughts in the comments. Happy World Breastfeeding Week!

I sit in a darkened room with your small body heavy against mine as I sing your song for the thousandth time. My tears fall. Is this the day? The moment to end the moments that came before? I remember the first time I held you, the first time you came to my breast. It was not easy.

I had been prepared. I read the books and watched the videos. Nothing prepared me for a too early baby. You were healthy, but small and it was a struggle for you to latch. I nursed and pumped, pumped and nursed. You had a syringe and a tube but phototherapy and tests drained what liquid I could provide. We persevered together and you were better.

I had been prepared. I had heard what others had said about pain. Nothing prepared me for the problem of having too much milk. Yes, that is a problem. You struggled to drink and closed your jaw down on my already raw nipples. It was every three hours and it hurt. I became familiar with something called vasospasm. I didn’t care what it was; I just knew I couldn’t keep going. I was ready to surrender, but with the help of a village, we persevered together and I was better.

You grew strong and tall and it was all from me. You fed anywhere, anytime and I could calm you, anywhere, anytime. It was a gift. You were mine and I was yours. Those moments when I could smell that sweet smell on your breath, I will cherish forever. Those moments when you were sick with fever and all you needed was to drink and be close, I will cherish forever. And I will cherish today because I know that change has come. I understand that last night was the last and tonight will be different. Every day from now will be different.

—Lisa Sample Hamilton, Ottawa

“I had a loving fiancé and stepdaughter who shared my love of gooey marshmallows over warm, melted chocolate and sweet, crumbly graham crackers,” explained Pamela in her entry.  “When the time came, and we were finally ready to unite our new family by marriage, we decided there was no better thing to do than to have a S’mores buffet at our wedding.”

Thank you for all of your entries, for all of your votes and for sharing some of your families’ most cherished summer S’mores memories.

Keep building memories with our incredible HERSHEY’S©* S’mores recipes, available here.

And if you’re in the Greater Toronto Area, be sure to come and enjoy some S’mores in celebration of National S’Mores Day on August 10th at Harbourfront Centre from noon to 3:00 p.m. Pamela will be onsite to help prepare the famous, chocolatey treat, and you’ll also be able to have a family photo taken to commemorate the memories that come with S’mores—a treat that’s been around for more than 80 summers. Want to Win Adorable Beach Gear from Pottery Barn Kids?

The perfect beach towels for toddlers and preschoolers.

Each Saturday morning, my son and I head down to the beach to eat breakfast, quack at the ducks, hide our legs in the sand and push a few trains across the pebbles and through the waves.

I’d given up on finding a good beach towel, one with generous length that washed well, dried quickly, takes up little space and had a hood, mostly because I couldn’t be bothered to go out of my way for a good hunt. But when I popped into my local PBK to pick up some big-boy sheets (love that they’re pre-washed, so you know how they’ll really feel), we spotted this great hooded beach wrap (perfect for kids who won’t stand still long enough for you to rub them down) and a cutie matching Klean Kanteen (our favourite top-functioning water bottle).

I’d forgotten about Pottery Barn. Truth be told, I hadn’t been there since buying the sweet baby sheets we’ve grown out of (sniff). But I’m glad to be back, and happy to see how much more eco the offerings are these days. Our sheets? Organic. The other PBK textiles, towels included? Oeko-Tex certified free of carcinogens, pesticides, etc. And Klean Kanteen? Our non-toxic favourite since pre-baby days.

Hooray! And I have a way to make you happy too. When I talked to my lovely friend at Pottery Barn Kids, she offered to give away to our readers a Turtle Beach Wrap, an Octopus Beach Wrap, a pink dot Klean Kanteen and a navy skateboard camo Klean Kanteen.

So, if you’d like to win one, please leave me a comment below letting me know what brand of swimsuit you wear. I’m on the hunt for something remotely flattering, so I don’t look too ramshackle beside my beautiful son.

—Melissa, CF’s lifestyle editor

UPDATE: Thanks for all your comments! The winners have been drawn. and I’ll keep you posted on my swimsuit hunt. I still haven’t bought my new suit (trying one on with a toddler in tow was a mistake), but I’m choosing online. I missed the one I wanted at Lime Ricki, so I’m picking from J Crew because I want this suit to look good for a long time :)

Vote for Your Favourite Family With S’More!

Who doesn’t have fond memories of huddling together on summer nights telling stories and eating S’mores? Whether you’re around a campfire, in your backyard, at the cottage by the fire or even at home by the stove, that combination of gooey roasted marshmallow, crispy graham wafer and creamy melted HERSHEY’S ©* Milk Chocolate simply tastes like summer. To celebrate the summer S’mores tradition, we started searching for the Family with S’more, and asked families all across Canada to submit their family’s favourite S’mores story.

After reviewing hundreds of entries, and hearing some incredible S’mores stories, our panel of experts have decided on the top three entries in the running to become the Official Family with S’More.

Now it’s up to you to vote and determine the winner!

The winner will participate in a public S’mores celebration in Toronto and will win a family weekend getaway to Niagara Falls, all courtesy of Hershey’s Milk Chocolate. Read the stories below and then vote for your favourite.

Need some help deciding? Get into the spirit by gathering the family to try out these delectable S’mores recipes.

Finalist #1:
Michelle J., Calgary

When my new boyfriend took me to meet his friends for the first time, I was very nervous.  We would be attending a BBQ at someone’s home, so I figured the best way to make new friends would be to WOW them with some delicious S’mores! There was laughter and smiles all around, as we compared sticky fingers and who the best marshmallow roaster was in the group. I think I chose the perfect icebreaker and I’m happy to say that Sean is a “new boyfriend” no longer—we were married in November of 2007!

Finalist #2:
Jennifer D., Edmonton

It was a chilly October night and I was looking for a cozy way to spend the evening with my new boyfriend. I thought it would be fun to share my love of camping and as the weather did not permit it I decided instead to recreate the atmosphere in my living room. I proceeded to set up a tent using chairs and blankets complete with sleeping bags and flashlights. And to add the finishing touch, what better way to simulate camping than with S’mores. We spent the evening eating S’mores in our makeshift tent, laughing, telling stories and making an absolute mess. But we had so much fun. Now three years later, we are married and have a little girl. And living room camping with S’mores has become a family favourite for cold chilly nights.

Finalist #3:
Pamela B., Ottawa

S’mores have always been a proud family tradition.  I fondly remember having them around when growing up on the farm, eating them over the campfire with a bag of marshmallows, a box of graham crackers, and lots of Hershey chocolate bars. As I got older, I kept my love for S’mores, and found a loving fiancé and stepdaughter who shared the same love of gooey marshmallows over warm, melted chocolate and crumbly, sweet graham crackers.

When the time came and we were finally ready to unite our new family by marriage, we decided there would be no better thing to do than to have a S’mores buffet at our wedding! We ordered dozens of handmade marshmallows in three flavours (vanilla, maple and cappuccino) to savour along with the regular old fashioned store-bought marshmallows. Then, we bought regular Hershey’s milk chocolate, dark chocolate, chocolate with almonds, mint chocolate, orange flavoured, pear flavoured; any interesting and unique flavor we could get our hands on!  We found a great indoor S’mores set, which we set up on the day of the wedding and let people go wild with imagination! It was by far, the biggest hit from our wedding, which people still talk about today when recalling our special day. We were so happy we managed to incorporate our favourite family tradition into the most important day of our life, when our three lives became a single family unit. And it made for the BEST late night snack ever!!!
