“It totally declutters my mind,” says Toronto mom Martina Fredrickson of the bedroom-and-closet makeover she received courtesy of Canadian Family and Ikea Canada.
This mom’s master bedroom was in dire need of organization. She and her husband’s wardrobes were packed into one cramped two-by-two closet, as well as an open shelving unit within the room itself. With a busy job — she’s a health information officer at a hospital — an active 19-month-old son, another child due any day, and no end in sight to the main floor renovation also taking place in her 80-year-old house, Fredrickson was a mommy in need of a calm oasis.
Enter Canadian Family editor-in-chief Jennifer Reynolds, who enlisted design expert Tamara Robbins Griffith of Ikea Canada to get the Fredricksons on track before baby arrived. “I knew this simple makeover would have a dramatic effect on their quality of life, just by reducing their stress from the renovation and improving their time management in the mornings,” says Reynolds. “The main goal was to bring serenity to their bedroom,” says Robbins Griffith. “I wanted to give them tons of great storage, but I also wanted to help them cultivate a style for the room.”
The first thing to go was the closet. Its bedroom entrance was sealed over and it was reborn as a hall-access linen closet. In its place in the master bedroom stands a wall-to-wall Ikea Pax wardrobe system, providing just under 100 square feet of storage within three double-door wardrobe units and one skinny, mirrored end unit. Each unit contains storage solutions customized to the couple. The first holds a single hanging rod for dresses, plus shoe racks and a high shelf (for less frequently used items). The second contains four wire drawers, a compartmentalized Lucite jewellery drawer, six cubbies outfitted with woven storage baskets, plus additional shelving. The third is kitted out with double-hung rods for tops and bottoms, as well as an overhead shelf. Finally, the single-door mirrored end unit stashes a laundry hamper and shelves.
With the storage crisis solved, spiffing up the rest of the bedroom was a breeze. The walls and trim were painted in soothing shades of pale blue and white. White doors were selected for the oak-framed Pax wardrobe units to provide contrast to the frame and to the room’s hardwood flooring. Cheerful, eye-catching hits of apple green, turquoise and orange were introduced to the room via drapery, bedding, cushions and a cotton throw rug. A pair of storage ottomans were added to the foot of the bed. (Washable slipcovers make white a definite “can-do” in this family home.)
According to her husband Jeremy, Martina’s been on cloud nine ever since the reno. Robbins Griffith isn’t surprised: “When your closet’s organized, it leaves space in your life for other things,” she says. The best part? It’s an easy weekend project that’s economical too: Robbins Griffith puts the tag on this makeover at $1,100. Pocket change? No. But you’ll know it’s worth it on hectic weekday mornings.
It’ll take more than a room makeover to get freelance writer Yuki Hayashi’s household organized.
