Moms Outraged Over “Sexist” Onesies

Obviously no one at Gymboree learned anything from the JCPenney scandal this past summer.

Or at least it would seem that way, given a new line of baby shirts sporting the phrases “Pretty like Mommy” and “Smart like Daddy” that has brought out the angry mamas again. They don’t like that girls are always told they have to be pretty and that boys are always told they have to be smart.

The moms at MomsRising.org even went as far as creating a petition, stating in their letter to the brand that they “urge [the brand] to stop selling children’s clothing that promotes harmful gender stereotypes immediately.”

In addition to the moms who are outraged, there are moms—like Sasha Brown-Worsham—who are urging moms to “chill” a little bit. “OK, we know. Moms are smart. And moms don’t get enough respect. That we know for sure. But we aren’t going to get respect by starting letter writing campaigns to Gymboree. If we get hysterical over every perceived slight, we won’t get anywhere,” she says in her post on The Stir. “Choose your battle, ladies. As moms we know this better than anyone.”

In a swift move, because clearly the brand knew not to try to compete with angry mothers, both of the shirts were removed from the store’s website.

Do you think the shirts are too sexist? Or are moms are making way too big a deal out of shirts that babies will outgrow within weeks?
