Simple Solutions: School Supplies in a Pinch

Okay, so I have a wee confession to make: when it comes to craft supplies, I am always unprepared. (I would have made a horrible Boy Scout.) I can never find tape when I need it — masking or Scotch. The scissors are always missing, even though I know we have at least 12 pairs. Glue sticks and glue are nowhere to be found. Construction paper? Forget about it. When I first became a parent and was home with my baby (who did a lot of sleeping), I had the brilliant idea of becoming a scrapbooker. Back then, I had boxes full of unused craft supplies because I was the world’s worst scrapbooker ever. But then in the great purge of ’07, I got rid of it all. It felt so great… at the time.

But now, when my kids come home with projects they need to complete, projects that they forgot to tell me about until the night before they are due, it’s a big problem. I have been known to pull used tape off of an old project of my son’s to solve a kindergarten taping dilemma. No, I am not proud.

So, when my son came home a few weeks ago and was basically in tears because he didn’t have a ruler to complete his homework assignment, I panicked. Ruler? Who keeps rulers in their homes? What’s an unprepared Mama to do? Run out at way-too-late in the evening to find a ruler?

No! Folks, there is the simplest fix here (assuming you can find a pair of scissors).

Behold. Printable rulers. They come as PDFs and offer several different sizes and measurements. There is bound to be one that’s appropriate for the homework assignment that you need to complete. And, as a bonus, you don’t even have to get out of your sweatpants to go out and buy a new one.
