If you haven’t had time to clean out your closet since the ’80s, you’re one wise woman: the ’80s are back. Again! New York’s Fall ’09 Fashion Week (yes, they do it that far ahead) was awash with bright, bright neon and giant shoulder pads. Even bright neon fur coats with giant shoulder pads! Some fashion insiders are a little disappointed by the lack of imagination with this whole ’80s revival, but a little neon nail polish might spruce up an otherwise drab outfit. Plus, if you have little girls, they’ll LOVE it.
If you’re not down with neon, another trend we saw a lot of in New York and Milan is protective, aggressive clothing: think layers and studs and strong lines. Romanticism has stepped aside for the time being and been replaced with fierce, punky, rock’n'rolla garb.
Both of these are different reactions to the global economic situation: on the one hand, we have the “everything’s a mess, so let’s PARTY” vibe and on the other hand we have “let’s armour up and deal with this stuff head on.” We prefer the latter.
Truth be told, we (vainly?) hope that by the time fall 2009 rolls around, we won’t have to react to the economy with our clothes or any other way, because by then, everything will once again be tickity boo. Heh, well, what is fashion after all without a little fantasy?
