Expert advice on how to create a stylish and functional nursery

Start small

Designing a baby’s room can be overwhelming. Start with a favourite piece as your inspiration and plan around it.

Think outside the box

Spend more on stuff that will last. Use a chest of drawers as a changing table through the diaper years then keep it in the room as your child grows (or in any room of your house).

Add balance

Make sure that big furniture pieces are not all at one end of the room. Spread out colours and patterns and maintain a balance between wood, upholstery and linens.

Create night light

Transparent fabrics make for beautiful window dressings but plan for blackout blinds to darken the room for daytime naps.

Plan for function

If you intend to nurse in the baby’s room, make sure you can see both a clock and a window from where you are sitting.

Take your time

Don’t try to decorate in a weekend—your room will look like a show house and lack personality. The best rooms have a combination of old and new pieces with fun finds from friends and family
