Snacks vs. Treats: What's in Your Pantry?

Non-Wheat Crackers

While reducing reliance on one type of grain as a source of carbohydrate is a good idea, switching it for another processed white grain isn't. This is a category that can beat wheat crackers hands down, but the switch can be tough for kids, so serve crackers with a dip or spread, or choose a seasoned brown rice cracker.

Shopping Guide:

• Whole-grain brown rice, oat or rye should be the first ingredient.

• Make sure flavoured rice crackers are made from whole-grain brown rice.

• Keep the sodium level in line with or below that of wheat crackers.

• "Gluten-free" does not necessarily mean better for you.
