Pick Your Battles

Leveling the floor was important to us, so that furniture in the room would be safe and stable for our little guy. Adding a new window would have a major impact on the sense of brightness & openness in the room, and since the exterior wall was siding rather than brick, it wasn’t too pricey for a pretty big impact. But one quirk we we forced to live with was a wiring one. The room’s main light switch is positioned in the hallway just outside the room. With plaster walls meaning rewiring would be more awkward and expensive, and no convenient location in the room for a new light switch anyhow (one shared wall with the adjoining row house, the other wall to be covered by the sliding door) it would have been cost-prohibitive and impractical to change. Instead, we focused on adding plug-in lamps to the room for more convenient lighting control.
