How to Choose the Best Bread for Your Kids

Kids’ lunches have come a long way (bentos, wraps) but sometimes only an old-fashioned sandwich will do. However, picking bread just isn’t as easy as it used to be—the racks at grocery stores are stacked high with options. But does choosing between white, whole-wheat and whole-grain bread make that much of a difference? Absolutely, says Toronto-based registered dietitian Jodi Robinson. “Canada’s Food Guide recommends at least half of all grain choices each day are whole grain. Whole grains can help kids have a steady energy level and maintain a healthy weight.”

Many types of bread are now fortified with added nutrients such as DHA, a form of omega-3. “Since omega-3s are such an important nutrient for kids, needed for brain development and healthy eyes, foods fortified with omega-3s are a good choice if you don’t eat the natural food sources (such as fish),” says Robinson, who recommends opting for whole grain first, fortification second. “You wouldn’t want to buy a white refined bread just because it has added omega-3 in it.”
