Hot dogs are the quintessential summer food. But despite their heavy presence on the backyard barbecue circuit this time of year, Shauna Lindzon, a consulting dietitian in Toronto, recommends that hot dogs fall under the “eat very occasionally” category (no more than once or twice a month). Studies show that a frequent consumption of processed meats can lead to an increased risk of colorectal cancer. The Rossos family (mom Kim, dad John, Sophie, 8, Tasha, 6 and Dylan, 1) from Toronto shared their thoughts on four popular hot dog brands.

Butterball Turkey Franks

Nutrition Facts per 1 wiener (56 g): 120 calories, 8 g fat (2.5 g saturated, 0.2 g trans), 65 mg cholesterol,
370 mg sodium, 5 g carbs (0 g fibre, 2 g sugars), 6 g protein, 20% iron. $3.50 for 8-pack.

Family says: These were Sophie’s favourite. “I love it. It’s delicious.” Mom Kim thought they had a good texture and a nice flavour while also being plump and juicy. Tasha said she loved them too, but said they taste “even better with ketchup.” The family agreed they would buy this brand again.

Dietitian says: If you are watching your sodium intake, this is the best of the bunch. One 56 g hot dog has 370 mg of sodium—even less than the smaller tested wieners. They are a good source of iron as well.
