There will be no cooking from scratch tonight. Not with hockey drop-off and your pounding headache. As you tumble an array of frozen breaded bits onto a cookie sheet, the kids dance for joy. You’re not quite as elated: how can this be healthy? “Eating packaged foods like this once a week isn’t a bad thing,” says Andrea Holwegner, a registered dietitian with Health Stand Nutrition Consulting in Calgary. Just look for products with no trans fat, real pieces of fish or chicken – nothing minced – and fewer than 10 grams of total fat, two grams of saturated fat and 600 milligrams of sodium per 100-gram serving. We found nationally available freezer faves that fit the bill and enlisted four young tasters – aged three, seven, nine and 17 – to take a bite. Grab your oven mitts and see what’s cooking.
Tip Look for less than 10 grams of fat per 100-gram serving
