Sandwich Cuties

Any sandwich can be made into cute bite-size sandwiches! Try fillings like peanut butter and jelly, ham and cheese, turkey, bologna, or roast beef. Lettuce stays fresh all day because it doesn't touch the sandwich condiments; it can be ripped into pieces and tucked into the sandwiches at lunchtime.

Ingredients
  • 2 lettuce leaves
  • 2 slices bread
  • 2 slices ham and cheese or other fillings
  • mayo or other condiments
  • Directions
  • 1.

Line the bento box with lettuce leaves.

  • 2.

Use mini sandwich bento punches or animal-shape cookie cutters to make cute shapes out of the bread and fillings.

  • 3.

Spread condiments on the bread. Assemble mini sandwiches and arrange them in the bento box alongside fruits and veggies.

  • 4.

Checkered or checkerboard apples are a cute bento tradition. They can be made in about 5 minutes with nothing more than a fresh apple and a good paring knife. Quarter an apple with a sharp paring knife. Take one slice, remove the core, and trim the bottom for a flat, square shape.

  • 5.

Score a grid into the apple skin. (Larger grids are easier because you don't have to cut out as many squares.)

  • 6.

Slide the tip of the knife underneath the skin of every other square, popping out a square of apple skin.

  • 7.

Done! Briefly soak your checkered apple in lemon water (or lightly salted water) to prevent browning.
