Recipe Excerpted from Yum-Yum Bento Box by Crystal Watanabe and Maki Ogawa
Line the bento box with lettuce leaves.
Use mini sandwich bento punches or animal-shape cookie cutters to make cute shapes out of the bread and fillings.
Spread condiments on the bread. Assemble mini sandwiches and arrange them in the bento box alongside fruits and veggies.
Checkered or checkerboard apples are a cute bento tradition. They can be made in about 5 minutes with nothing more than a fresh apple and a good paring knife. Quarter an apple with a sharp paring knife. Take one slice, remove the core, and trim the bottom for a flat, square shape.
Score a grid into the apple skin. (Larger grids are easier because you don't have to cut out as many squares.)
Slide the tip of the knife underneath the skin of every other square, popping out a square of apple skin.
Done! Briefly soak your checkered apple in lemon water (or lightly salted water) to prevent browning.
