Dilemma 6 – How to Master a Kid’s Room

"My 12-year-old and I are in a tug of war over her room. She wants something girly and bright, while I prefer something simple that will grow with her. How can I give her a bedroom both of us will like?" It's easy! (If you follow these nine rules, that is.)

Opt for a soft, muted colour palette — not too bright or too light.

Use antique furnishings. They get better with age.

Hang a chandelier with removable shades that can be embellished or changed as her tastes develop.

Choose hardwood flooring and roll out different area rugs as she grows up.

Build in a fabric-wrapped bulletin board to give a room pattern and colour and a place for her to pin up her favourite things.

Keep things minimal and uncluttered.

Provide enough freestanding and built-in storage to accommodate her changing needs.

Dress the room in the same style as the rest of the house.
