Fun Food Idea: Pancake Art

There’s only so much room on your fridge to proudly display your child’s Jackson Pollock-esque masterpieces before you run out of space and have to start choosing favourites. Solution: bypass the fridge entirely and help your kids create edible works of art with this brilliant Pancake Art idea from artist and mom Jenni Price.

While Jenni has created some incredible edible art in her kitchen, we love that she gets her kids involved by handing over bottles of colourful pancake batter, firing up the griddle and letting their imaginations do the rest. You don’t have to be an artist to get in on the fun, though! All you need for this activity is a basic pancake recipe, some squeezable bottles (check your local dollar store) and food colouring. Food colouring has become a health concern, especially for children, but some commercial companies do produce natural food colouring, which can be found online or at baking supply stores. However, if you want to up the nutritional value and avoid potentially unhealthy chemicals, consider tinting your batter using juice from blueberries, beets, kale, etc.

We also love Jenni’s idea for pancake dippers—because let’s be honest, putting delicious food on a stick just makes it ten times better. For $5, Jenni will send you a full photo tutorial for some brightly coloured owl pancake dippers that are sure to be a hit with kids of all ages.
