Clothes Shopping Tips for TeensTeens are exposed to a cross-section of influences but none more influential than actors, models and pop stars who flaunt sexual imagery. The result is progressively more provocative and suggestive fashions being marketed to young girls. This of course can lead to a heightened focus on appearance and an unhealthy self-image. It is important for parents and teens to talk about what is age appropriate and some clear guidelines must be agreed on.

Before you make a trip to the mall in search of all the “gotta haves” here are some tips to help you keep your cool and get the most for your money!

  • Set a budget and stick to it. Prioritize what is needed most.
  • Start with a little research: make sure you are aware of your daughter’s school dress code. It should spell out what styles of dress are inappropriate and have set consequences for those who choose to ignore it.
  • Scan magazines and start a fashion file of looks you and your budding fashionista enjoy and would like to re-create within your budget.
  • Do your homework: go through your daughter’s closet with her and have her try items on. Recycle or give away what no longer fits or works.
  • Shop early in the in the day and make sure your teen is ready to try clothes on. Have her wear something easy to get on and off, wear comfortable shoes and travel as light as possible. Make sure she has on the right undergarments for what she will be trying on.
  • Buy basics such as t-shirts, underwear etc. at end-of-season sale time.
  • Use the three-way mirror. What may look fabulous from the front may not be so from the back.
  • Allow your teen to dress well with hair and makeup done for shopping to give tried on items the best advantage.
  • Try a new store each time at the mall to broaden your fashion horizons and to browse new ideas.
  • Always be sure she tries on everything you buy and make no exceptions.
  • Don’t be in a hurry – allow enough time.
