What’s it all about?
This classic story was first published in 1960 and follows the trials of a confused baby bird as he tries to locate his missing mother. The little chick hatches to find that his mother, unbeknownst to him, has gone out in search of food. As a result, the little chick sets out to find her. Along the way he asks a tractor, an airplane , a cow and a kitten if they are his mother. All seems lost until a triumphant moment of recognition when the baby chick finally finds himself in the company of his loving mom. The illustrations are simple but expressive, and the straightforward text plays on the memory-stimulating repetition that is present in most successful baby books.
What is this book teaching my toddler?
The repetition of the question “Are you my mother?” pulls your toddler into the text as they reason through why each object or animal the little bird encounters could or couldn’t be his mother. The book also deals with a fundamental fear of most young children, parental separation, with lighthearted humor and a happy ending.
