5 Delicious Recipes to Celebrate Hanukkah

Photography by Angela Coppola, Jewish Holidays Cookbook

Tonight marks the first night of the Jewish celebration of Hanukkah. There are many wonderful traditions that come with Hanukkah—the lighting of the menorah, reciting special blessings, gifting children with Hanukkah gelt, playing with dreidels and, of course, enjoying a host of holiday foods together with friends and family—especially fried foods.

Why so many fried treats? Our foodie friends at 20 Minute Supper Club explain: “The celebration of Hanukkah centres on the Miracle of the Oil. When the temple in Jerusalem was defiled by enemies 2,000 years ago, the eternal light was extinguished. When Jewish soldiers returned to rededicate the temple, they could only find one day’s worth of oil. This oil (olive oil, specifically) miraculously lasted for eight days: long enough to press more oil to keep the light burning.”

With this in mind, we’ve gathered five delicious recipes that are perfect for a Hanukkah celebration.

Potato Latkes with Applesauce
Mini Salted Caramel Sufganiyot
Crispy Sweet Potato Latkes
Fried Eggplant with Salt-Pickled Lemons
Edible Dreidels
