Back-to-School Tween and Teen Fashion Trends

With one last (long) weekend before the kids head back to school, we turned to Robin Keeler, fashion director at Yorkdale Shopping Centre, to find out the hottest trends for this year’s teens and tweens. Check out our gallery below to see what looks will be gracing the classrooms this year.

Robin also gave us her best tips and tricks for back to school shopping:

• Remember that kids don’t always fit into just one trend, so don’t be afraid to try a few different styles.

• Start with a little research—get into your closet, try things on and see what fits, what works, and what your child still likes.

• Have a master plan, and do a cost vs. wear formula and work out your budget before you hit the stores.

• Buy basics in stores that are affordable to you. There are many stores that cater to different budgets, and you don’t have to break the bank to get the latest styles.

• Spend the most money on long-wear pieces like coats, book bags, jeans and shoes. (Note: The biggest trend in footwear this season is boots, so be sure to add a fab pair to your list!)

• Spend less on trendy items, as they will change more frequently.

• Stick to a few colours and a few neutrals. This will help to stretch your wardrobe.

• Accessories are key! (And are a great, easy way to update any wardrobe.) Look for things like slouchy toques, long scarves, wooden jewelry or leather bracelets, depending on your child’s style.

• Don’t be afraid to wait until your kids have gone back to school to do your shopping. This will give them a chance to see what their friends are wearing, and maybe get a little more inspiration. September is a great shopping month!

• Shop early in the day when you are feeling fresh and energetic, and pack light. But most importantly, make it a fun thing!

Robin has some great style tips for moms, too! To check them out, click here.
