The Most Flattering Essential Summer Shorts

Look courtesy of Club Monaco

Short trends come and go (just like our once-killer gams have), but a classic length and style of short can carry your summer wardrobe from year to year.

So what looks best? I prefer an in-between style: Not short shorts (phew!), but not Bermudas either (which can be equally unflattering on many women). Depending on your height, somewhere between a 3-to-5 inch inseam is probably most favourable. At that length it should fall past the largest section of your thigh, and will accentuate the narrowing part of your leg.

Try pairing shorts by day with a simple wedge. Still comfy enough to do your errands in, a slight heel will lengthen and tone more than flip flops. And don’t be afraid to wear your shorts out for a night on the town; paired with heels they can provide the sexiness of a skirt, without compromising comfort.

Here are some of our favourites styles this season:

Clean cut, with subtle military details
Comfy, casual with a mustard zing
Nautical, streamlined white
Tailored, with matching blazer
Dressed up Batik

Fill in the Blank: I Never Pictured Myself…

Although I never looked this good in my Bjorn, I did love that it didn't create a muffin top like other carriers.

I never looked this good in my Bjorn, though I did love that it doesn't create a muffin top effect like other carriers.

Last Friday I was walking down the street with a friend, pushing strollers past a hipster happy-hour spilling out onto the sidewalk from a neighbourhood bistro. And that’s when I started thinking of all the things that, pre-mom, I never would have pictured myself doing, such as:

1. Walking down the street while eating and pushing a stroller.

2. Walking down the street while eating, pushing a stroller and talking at the same time.

3. Cheering “Hooray!” when the elevator finally arrives. Um, yeah, out loud, and at the office.

4. Playing peek-a-boo through a buttonhole on my coat.

5. Walking as though I had a baby strapped to me for a good month post-baby carrier, aka the Bjorn walk.

Melissa, CF’s lifestyle editor

So, fill in the blank. Before I was a mom, I never imagined myself…

Day Five: DIY Mother’s Day Gift

We aren’t really fans of giving mom a dish towel for Mother’s Day, but this idea could easily be used for a spring tablecloth or cloth napkins, and even an apron (but only if she really loves to cook!). Elyse over at By Little Hands suggests attaching foam shapes to cardboard for a stencil, but you could also use potato stamps.

Day One: DIY Mother’s Day Gift Idea

This week we’ll be sharing some of our favourite homemade gift ideas for Mother’s Day. To start off the week is one of our personal Handmade faves, the family tree blocks from our March issue. They were originally created as an heirloom toy for babies and toddlers, but we think they’d make a great keepsake for mommy (or grandma!), with images and memories of all her favourite people. They’ll look fab on your coffee table or as a bookend, and make it a  craft project you can do with the kids for an even more memorable Mother’s Day.

A Sale At One of Our Favourite Children’s Designers

If you picked up a copy of our April issue you would have seen our Alice in Wonderland fashion shoot. We had tons of fun making it but we couldn’t have done it without some of our absolute most-favourite children’s clothing companies, like Patouche who fashioned the pants and vest of this outfit.

In fact you can find Patouche all over our issues, she made this great headwrap and this capelet too! The stunning designer mama behind this brand is Toronto-based Kessa Laxton, mom of two. If you like what you saw on our Mad Hatter, than you’ll be thrilled to hear that Kessa is marking down the prices of the fabulous vests he’s wearing (among other things, all of which are handmade and locally produced) to just $25.

You can visit her store to buy online or find retail stores.

Hot Or Not: Pillow Case Dresses

Would you dress your kid in these?

Dress images provided by (from left) freshlypicked.blogspot.com and cafemometsymoms.blogspot.com

We just got a press release about a fashion trend that is all the rage – but we were surprised to learn that the trend is turning pillow cases into summer dresses for little girls!

So, we started scouring the web, and it turns out they are right! These Little House on the Praire-esque  dresses are everywhere, and if it ain’t a mama selling her own crafty designs, then its another mama showing how you can make ‘em yourself.

But we are not sure we understand what all the hub bub is about? I mean they are just pillow cases, and they do still kind of look like pillow cases, don’t they? But they are extremely cheap to buy ($15 or less!) and even cheaper to make (3 bucks at your local VV boutique or perhaps you already have a stash of old pillow cases, plus some ribbon).

So would you buy or make a pillow case dress?

If you are thinking of making one, check out this comprehensive tutorial (including sizing!).

If you are thinking of buying, these are some of our favourites – more hippy chic than Laura Ingalls:

- This lady doesn’t just use pillow cases, she makes clothes from drapery, sheets and more!

- We love the fabrics she chooses for her pillow cases - no cartoon characters, we promise!

- A jazzed-up version!

But whatever you choose, be it to pillow case or not, just be sure to be choosy when it comes to the fabric – that’s really where this craft can come amiss.

Swap Mamas: Second Hand For The Techie Mom

We just discovered a site that combines two of our favourite things: frugal shopping and social media, and if we can get both things in one place, than that makes us a happy mama.

Banking on the economic condition of the past couple years, the mommy behind Swap Mamas decided to make it easier for moms to get rid of their used and no longer needed goods. The site hosts swapping circles that are divided by region or by groups of similar interests/purpose (for example, maternity clothes by size, DVD swaps, costumes, gift card exchanges, and even free advice!) People then make specific postings (think Craiglist – but more friendly and less sketchy) for items they wish to swap or gift (the site promotes gifting, which basically means instead of exchanging items people just give away their unwanted goods for peace of mind, some karma and extra living space!) Those interested respond and work out the details.

One of our fave sections on the site is the crafting section. What a great idea—we can’t tell you how many times we’ve looked for a couple dozen postage stamps or bottle caps and have come up empty handed. Everything from extra Popsicle sticks to scrapbooking supplies are available on the site (and to think we got brain freeze last summer attempting to make a Popsicle house!).

So far there are only 84 members so the pickings are still a little slim, but the American version has quickly grown to nearly 7,000 community members, and we know that this is a trend that will definitely pick up among the online mommy-set.

So, what items in your house would you like to gift? After this weekend, we’d have to say our chocolate (or else it’ll be all of our clothes because they will no longer fit!)
