Meet the Latest Disney Princess
Given that we have a few very enthusiastic Disney Princess fans in our various families, our office has been buzzing with news of Disney’s plan to launch a new one. The new princess, named Tiana, is a featured character in Disney’s upcoming 2009 animated musical fairy tale, The Princess and the Frog. The film is set in New Orleans, and sees Disney’s return to hand-drawn animation.
The doll will hit shelves sometime this fall, and will most likely be under $20. Of course, the princess will also be featured on the obligatory school supplies, etc., and her outfit will be available as a Halloween costume.
With eight princess already under their belt (five of them are white), this is the first black princess Disney has introduced.
We’re also very pleased to see that Disney isn’t abandoning the medium that made them famous, and are coming back to hand-drawn movies. We love computer animation, don’t get us wrong, but a Disney film isn’t a Disney film to us unless it has that certain je-ne-sais-quoi that comes from old-fashioned animation.
We will be doing our best to keep our Princess-loving wee ones calm until the movie is released.
