Our Favourite Christmas Decorations This Year: Owls

We’ve been following the owl trend for months now and we are so happy to see that it has carried over into the holiday season. So what do owls have to do with Christmas? Meh who cares, they are cute and when done correctly can provide just the right amount of kitsch or glam (depending on your personal taste).

So how do you do it correctly? We suggest choosing one particular owl-focused piece and then carry the theme throughout the room (or floor of your house) with similar colours and texture so that you don’t over do it with the hooters.

So, why not start with the tree? Buy, or make, a couple dozen owl ornaments for a themed tree this year and add simple coordinating details, such as ribbons, garlands and simple bulbs or ornaments (we especially love snowy owls mixed with metallic ribbons and earthy accents, like pine cones). If a themed-tree isn’t an option at your house, try a smaller tabletop version or place some owls in vintage cloches and line them on your mantel along with garlands (real when possible).

But, if owl decor isn’t right for you, maybe  you’ll find some of these great owl-inspired gifts under your tree this year.

Back-to-School Tween and Teen Fashion Trends

With one last (long) weekend before the kids head back to school, we turned to Robin Keeler, fashion director at Yorkdale Shopping Centre, to find out the hottest trends for this year’s teens and tweens. Check out our gallery below to see what looks will be gracing the classrooms this year.

Robin also gave us her best tips and tricks for back to school shopping:

• Remember that kids don’t always fit into just one trend, so don’t be afraid to try a few different styles.

• Start with a little research—get into your closet, try things on and see what fits, what works, and what your child still likes.

• Have a master plan, and do a cost vs. wear formula and work out your budget before you hit the stores.

• Buy basics in stores that are affordable to you. There are many stores that cater to different budgets, and you don’t have to break the bank to get the latest styles.

• Spend the most money on long-wear pieces like coats, book bags, jeans and shoes. (Note: The biggest trend in footwear this season is boots, so be sure to add a fab pair to your list!)

• Spend less on trendy items, as they will change more frequently.

• Stick to a few colours and a few neutrals. This will help to stretch your wardrobe.

• Accessories are key! (And are a great, easy way to update any wardrobe.) Look for things like slouchy toques, long scarves, wooden jewelry or leather bracelets, depending on your child’s style.

• Don’t be afraid to wait until your kids have gone back to school to do your shopping. This will give them a chance to see what their friends are wearing, and maybe get a little more inspiration. September is a great shopping month!

• Shop early in the day when you are feeling fresh and energetic, and pack light. But most importantly, make it a fun thing!

Robin has some great style tips for moms, too! To check them out, click here.

Joe Fresh at LG Fashion Week: Hits & Misses

Photo by Jess Baumung courtesy of FASHION

Photo by Jess Baumung courtesy of FASHION

Let us start off by saying first that we LOVE Joe Fresh. We love it for its convenience: malls are an intimidating thought for moms—crowded areas, food court temptations and a whack of nothing but way-too-trendy-for-mom clothes—so the ability to pick up little Johnny’s entire summer wardrobe within four trips to the local grocery store is a major bonus. We also love it for its price: in fact, today one of our staffers is sporting a pair of last seasons Joe Fresh pumps, price tag $29, and not a scuff in sight or a heel replacement in need.

With that being said, and it pains us to say this, the Joe Fresh presentation at LG Fashion Week left us feeling a little…uh…confused on Wednesday night. While we happily report that much of the styles were on par with what we would expect from the frugal fashion line, the rest was a little too out there even for the most fashionable mommies in our office. And perhaps they were forecasting some trends that we just aren’t aware of, but nevertheless, here are our picks for hits and misses of Wednesday’s show.

Hits:

- Sheer silk Victorian-inspired blouse (with a cami-underneath, of course)
- Knee- and mid-calf-length pleated skirts (sooo comfortable!)
- Knit tube scarfs (What is it?: basically a circular scarf-meaning, it has no ends-that becomes like an over-sized shawl that you can drape around your neck once or twice—as demonstrated in the photo above)

Misses:

- A down ‘mancho‘, as we like to call it (Think a down jacket, but in a poncho-style and for men)
Quilted down skirts (Remember these in the 90’s? Well Joe has brought them back, as much as we wish he hadn’t—see photo above and judge for yourself!)
- A shearling ensemble, complete with vest and skirt (Our personal distaste for shearling may account for this one, but too much of anything is never a good thing)

Lovin’ Lundstrom at LG Fashion Week

lundstrom

The Canadian coat guru has put a new spin on her old tricks. Linda Lundstrom showed her first collection this Tuesday at LG Fashion Week and brought the crowd to their feet. Mixing modern silhouettes (think billowing sleeves, high collars, and slouchy trousers) with her staple fur trim and high-quality fabrics, Lundstrom is appealing to a much wider audience of fashionistas.

The Leparka designer has gone through a bit of a redesign renaissance and we anticipate that practically everyone could find an envy-worthy coat within the collection. We suspect nostalgic 20-somethings will warm up to the black and white buffalo-check lumber jacket, while 40-something mommies will swoon over the many cocoon-styled jackets to choose from. If you can’t wait for the fall line to become available, check out her spring stuff (available in select retailers now) or pick up a copy of the April issue of Canadian Family magazine to see Lundstrom’s take on the paper bag princess frock [page 20].

The Canadian designer is sold at a bevy of shops around North America. And if local manufacturing is your bag, you’ll be pleased to know the Lundstrom line is designed, manufactured and produced in Toronto.

It’s an ’80s Fashion Renaissance! Again.

If you haven’t had time to clean out your closet since the ’80s, you’re one wise woman: the ’80s are back. Again! New York’s Fall ‘09 Fashion Week (yes, they do it that far ahead) was awash with bright, bright neon and giant shoulder pads. Even bright neon fur coats with giant shoulder pads! Some fashion insiders are a little disappointed by the lack of imagination with this whole ’80s revival, but a little neon nail polish might spruce up an otherwise drab outfit. Plus, if you have little girls, they’ll LOVE it.

If you’re not down with neon, another trend we saw a lot of in New York and Milan is protective, aggressive clothing: think layers and studs and strong lines. Romanticism has stepped aside for the time being and been replaced with fierce, punky, rock’n'rolla garb.

Both of these are different reactions to the global economic situation: on the one hand, we have the “everything’s a mess, so let’s PARTY” vibe and on the other hand we have “let’s armour up and deal with this stuff head on.” We prefer the latter.

Truth be told, we (vainly?) hope that by the time fall 2009 rolls around, we won’t have to react to the economy with our clothes or any other way, because by then, everything will once again be tickity boo. Heh, well, what is fashion after all without a little fantasy?

See highlights from New York’s Fashion Week below (from style.com). Find Milan highlights here.

Check in with our friends at FASHION for updates from all the Fall 09 shows in Paris, Milan, New York and London.

Trend Watch: Short Movies Starring Kids Acting like Adults

If you haven’t seen The Landlord, you really should. We loved this hilarious little movie starring Will Ferrell and sweet little Pearl, who poses as his agro, foul-mouthed landlord.

Looks like The Landlord started a trend: short movies starring kids coming to your door and acting like adults. Here’s a new addition to this very niche cinematic genre: Door to Door Salesman (sadly, not starring Will Ferrell, but charming nonetheless).
