Big Lotto Dreams. Only $5

via Lisa Brewster cc

Like so many Canadians, we too dream of winning the lottery. Of course the odds of winning tonight’s big Lotto Max prize is 1 in 28 million, but no matter, we bought a group ticket anyways. Here’s what the staff of Canadian Family would do with our share of $50 million.

“There would be many, many cabanas and umbrella drinks in my future. The end.” -Christina, CF’s managing editor

“I would live in this hotel I’m in right now and buy a suite for each member of the team.” – Jen CF’s editor (currently staying in some swanky spot in New York City.)

“Apologies for stating the obvious, but PAY OFF MY MORTGAGE! Travel. Get an iPad. Give a bunch away. Use it for good, save a little for evil.” -Colleen, CF’s acting art director

“Well, I’d start out by purchasing a small chain of Taco Bells, so I could always have a dependable supply of fries supreme. Then I’d immediately fly, in quick succession, to the top five destinations on my “always wanted to visit” list. First stop? Cape Town.” -Tim, CF’s contributing editor

“I would buy a place with a closet the size of my current apartment, and fill it completely. And then I’d leave it all behind and travel everywhere Tim hasn’t been.” -Shannon, CF’s style editor

“I would golf a whole lot. The four hospitals that helped my daughter Charlotte would get huge donations for their preemie departments. And I would buy my brother-in-law a condo so he could move out of his parents basement.” – Robin, CF’s senior editor

“I’d go back to school and become a midwife. Then work casually from home with one or two patients while making three more babies of my own. ” -Jenn, CF’s associate art director

“In addition to not worrying about the cost of daycare at some point, or the cost of much else, for that matter, I would finish up all of the projects around the house, invest most of it and spend the rest of the summer at the cottage writing.” -Megan, editor CF.ca

How about you? What would you do with $50 million?

Quick And Easy Kitchen Makeover

Inspired by our online editor’s whole-house reno (check out her fabulous new bathroom in our summer issue), we thought we’d share a little secret about painted counter tops: they can look good!

Her coating of choice is Stone Effects epoxy. So, if you are thinking about painting your counters (which is a cost efficient way to update your entire kitchen), this is the product to use: very durable, high gloss and it has a hard-as-a-rock finish.

But a word of warning, the trip from drab to darling isn’t without it’s difficulties. Application is a pain: It dries very quickly, so you have to move fast; and, it’s very easy to introduce air bubbles and make a general mess of it. A good suggestion is to buy a practice epoxy set and find a disposable surface so that you can get your bearings before attempting for real.

Post-painting tips:

- Like many counters, avoid putting super hot things or cut directly on the surface
- Finger print smudges can be problematic, especially with such a high shine, so keep a kitchen-safe cleaner close by

Gift Idea: Cool Rain Gear For Father’s Day

Lacoste L27 Mid Rubber

Following the popularity of Wellies, Lacoste has created a rubber boot that is equal parts style and function. The sneaker-like design means Dad doesn’t have to worry about cramping his style with the dreaded duckies or shoe covers, and at $90 we think that the money you’ll save on ruining non-practical, water-logged footwear is well worse the price tag. Pick them up now at Lacoste Boutiques and Browns Stores.

Shoe Saving Solution

Photo courtesy of horaceko via Flickr

Remember our new summer shoes? Well I loved mine so much I did pretty much everything in them, including barbecuing for the family. Warning: barbecue sauce plus synthetic leather equals an irreversible mess.

But rather than discard the wedges into the lost loves section of my closet, I had a shoe epiphany. Since the stain (which deepened the butterscotch-y colour the sandals started out as) was a result of the oils in the barbecue sauce, I decided to stain the rest of the sandals to match. Using whatever oil I had in the kitchen at the time and a cotton cloth I spread a thin layer of oil over the fabric, and let dry. To my delight, it worked, and now I can go back to wearing my favourite sandals.

What are your secret weapons when it comes to stains?

—Shannon, CF’s style editor

Isabel Toledo Spices Things Up At Payless

Fashion insider favourite Isabel Toledo (the designer behind Michelle Obama’s much talked about inauguration dress) is joining the likes of Christian Siriano, Alice + Olivia and Lela Rose with her leap from high-end can’t-haves to ultra-affordable must-haves.

The new line, of which we’ve only seen sketches, will be available in the fall. The purses and shoes cater to fashion-forward bargainistas, because, as with all of Payless’s designer collaborations, the collection is a little more daring than the house brands. Expect interesting new shapes and combinations of texture.

While Toledo isn’t well known within the general community, she has been on the fashion scene for a while now. She debuted her first collection at NYC’s fashion week in 1985, performed a year-long stint as desinger of Anne Klein in 2007 and most recently she, along with her husband, was honoured with The Couture Council Artistry of Fashion Award.

Toledo’s collection will be in Payless stores this September.

Six Ways to Pay Down Your Mortgage Fast

Originally published in May 2010 by Camilla Cornell

The sooner you are able to wipe away weekly payments, the richer you’ll feel, so boogie down with and do the mortgage hustle.

1 Scrape together the biggest down payment you can manage If you can come up with a 20 percent down payment on your home to begin with, you can save on the amount of interest paid and avoid taking on a high-ratio mortgage.

2 Opt for a shorter amortization period Consider that, by paying a $200,000 mortgage loan off over 20 years instead of 25, you’ll save $23,670 in interest payments.

3 Count your pennies A payment increase of as little as $25 weekly ($100 monthly) will slash almost eight years off your 25-year amortization period on a $100,000 mortgage, saving you a hefty $10,600 in interest. Think about it—that’s just cutting out one week of Starbucks.

4 Reallocate some resources from an RESP If you’re mortgage-free by the time the kids are in school, you can redirect cash toward their education.

5 Make an anniversary payment Save the difference between what you can reasonably pay and what you are actually paying and plop it down on the anniversary date of your mortgage to pay it down faster.

6 Know when to back off It makes no sense to max out your mortgage payments at the risk of racking up credit card debt at astronomical rates of interest. Be wise.

Healthy Homemade Lemonade

Nothing completes a late sunny afternoon like a glass of fresh lemonade. Downfall? The sugar high that lasts through dinner and trickles into bath and bed time. For a less rowdy evening, try this no-sugar added recipe, submitted by reader Abigail in 2008.

Squeeze out the juice of four or five lemons (about 200 mL). Mix with one litre of unsweetened apple juice. Add fresh mint leaves or strawberries for a tasty garnish.

Tip: For summer fetes, add seltzer to make it bubbly for the kids, and to please adults, serve it over ice with Pimm’s.
