Babies Wish Elvis a Happy 75th!

ElvisBaby1In honour of Elivs’ 75th birthday, BuzzFeed compiled a collection of photos of babies channeling his spirit.

Looking at these pics has us All Shook Up with laughter.

While engrossed by these photos, there was A Little Less Conversation around the office.

We have Suspicious Minds: how can there be so many pictures of Elvis babies?

Don’t Be Cruel, just look at the pics! We Can’t Help Falling in Love with these little faces.

Really, look at the photos. It’s Now or Never.

(Ridiculous Elvis puns brought to you by our spectacular March 2010 issue: we’re in the middle of finishing it and deadlines always have us feeling a little silly.)

Post-Apocalyptic Strollers? Oh My!

Gun Shape Baby Carriage, Photo by designboom

These definitely aren’t the the new Bugaboo, folks. We couldn’t help but be fascinated by this fantastical baby gear art installation that would make any survivalist parent’s heart race. Chinese artist Shi Jinsong’s works are part of an exhibition in Milan right now, certainly not for sale anywhere near you. But isn’t it fun to imagine the long, awkward stares you’d garner pushing baby down the street in one of these Mad Max numbers? (Though, if you were brandishing that kind of firepower, you could be sure nobody would say anything!)

For more practical approaches to your baby transportation needs, check out our roundup of family-tested best strollers.

Etsy Part Deux: Poppytalk

Fine we will be the first to admit it… we are Etsy-oholics. But there’s now a new site vying for our attention. For everyone out there who dreams about naturally-dyed dollies and hand-painted ceramics at night and would rather crochet beanies than do the dishes, we thought you should know—if you haven’t already heard—about a little thing called Poppytalk.

Same brilliant idea: a marketplace of fabulous artists who create and sell their masterpieces online, but was started by a Canadian! Poppytalk offers a host of fun insider info about cool shops and crafters in your ‘hood (so shipping fees are that much cheaper). On their blog, they have fun monthly-themed launches to showcase specific types of art. Last month’s theme was affordable art—how recession friendly!

To get you started on the road to crafty bliss, we thought we’d share some of our fave artists from the site:shira

Shira Sela: We adore the simplicity and sweet colours of these prints. They’d be great to help transition a little girl room into a big girl room.

Lewas Designs: We have also jumped on the decal bandwagon and are loving these slightly-less mass-produced options. Totally want the dandelion one for the computer!

modernpop: This artist makes beautiful, whimsical prints that look fab in a nursery. And they would make great shower gifts, too!

The site is still young, so it is still building up its database and, although they do share a lot of artists with Etsy, there is less stuff to shuffle through to find what you are actually looking for. Now, we aren’t saying that we are giving up our love affair with Etsy, we have just decided to spread the love around.

KidRex Offers Child-Friendly Web Surfing

Kid Rex

With a keyboard at the hands of curious children, parents can only imagine what a child may stumble upon during any given Google search. Thankfully, they’ll be able to breathe a little easier now that Google has stepped up to the challenge of creating KidRex, a child-friendly search engine alternative.

KidRex uses Google SafeSearch technology, as well as Google Custom Search functions. The search engine filters through keywords, phrases and URLs to block inappropriate content from reaching your child. It is also monitored daily by KidRex researchers, and although some websites are bound to slip through the cracks, it’s an excellent resource for online play.

In addition to its great safety features, KidRex also provides helpful tips and tricks for parents who want to talk to their children about smart and safe ways to use the Internet, and covers topics such as the importance of password protection and the dangers of online strangers.

This creative Google masterpiece is enticing to children with its colourful interface and will make kids feel as though they have a special place on the Internet that is all their own. Set this site as your Internet homepage, and let your children discover some new online wonders.

Our Latest Obsession: Google Maps

See that red bubble? That's us!

See that red bubble? That's us!

We can honestly say that we don’t know what we did before Google Maps came along. It is, by far, the best function that Google has adapted to date. Just think about how many times in a day someone refers to searching for something on the Internet as “Googling.” Well, Google Maps has quickly become an equally important tool for helping lost travellers around unknown cities and streets.

What we also love about the Google Map feature is how it captures the world around us, whether we like it or not. Some Google-mapped addresses allow you to take a virtual tour of the place you are searching for or allow you to see photos of the surrounding area.

Unfamiliar with Google Maps? Give this little experiment a try: Google map the following addresss: 8 Sampsonia Way, Pittsburgh, Allegheny, PA 15212, USA. Go to the “street view” function and see what Sampsonia Way in Pittsburgh has to offer.

Google Maps has forever captured adult playtime at its finest. And we can’t help but wonder, is there anything Google can’t do?

Are you Right or Left Brained?

picture-1While working late one night on our April 2009 issue, we became temporarily distracted by this test. An animation of a spinning woman can tell you if you’re right or left brained by which direction you see her spinning.

Most of us saw her spinning clockwise at first, which seems to indicate we’re right-brained, but we soon figured out various strategies to make her switch back and forth. Some strategies seemed to work better (looking at her from the corner of your eye) than others (asking her politely).

Which way does she spin for you? And can you make her change direction?
