Despite the home’s unconventional demeanour, it is, says Magwood, a terrific family house. Sure, they may have lost their main-floor office, now that the front room next to the kitchen has morphed into a bustling playroom. And sure, the home’s original minimalist appeal has been diluted by encroaching toys, books and crafts, and by the shoes, boots and coats that line the front hallway. But according to Magwood, who’s currently in development with a new cooking show and whose first cookbook, the delicious Dish Entertains (Harper Collins Canada), arrived in stores last fall, the kitchen is still the centre of day-to-day family life. And the quiet style that attracted them to the house in the first place still simmers just beneath the surface.

Toronto-based Jennifer David marvels at Trish’s ability to balance family, home and a high-profile career—without resorting to take-out dinners.

Creative Play
From the centrally located kitchen, Trish has a clear view of the playroom at the front of the house. Sliding frosted glass doors let her block off the mess in a flash.
