The idea that a child could be in such an impossibly dark place as to take his or her own life is heartbreaking beyond words. But for too many young people in Canada, it is a reality. According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, “suicide is the second leading cause of death for Canadians between the ages of 10 and 24.”

Following the recent death of Ottawa teenager Jamie Hubley, Canadian comedian Rick Mercer used the “Rant” segment of his show, Rick Mercer Report, to address the issue of bullying and teen suicide. In his rant, Mercer says: “It’s no longer good enough for us to tell kids who are different that it’s going to get better. We have to make it better now, that’s every single one of us. Every teacher, every student, every adult has to step up to the plate.”

Rick Mercer is a Canadian hero. His rants are always sharp and to the point. He seldom, if ever, gets it wrong.
