materials

  • Gourd or dried out squash
  • Drill
  • Fork
  • Braided yarn or rope
  • Paint
  • Varnish or shellac, optional

instructions

1 Drill a 1½” hole in the fullest part of a gourd or dried squash, watching for dust. Drill three holes (about ¼”) — two through the top and one through the base — to let air in and water out. (If you’re like us and not the DIY sort, ask your local hardware shop to do it.)

2 With a fork, pull out dried flesh from interior, reserving seeds for a spring planting activity.

3 Thread braided yarn or rope through top holes.

4 Wipe clean and paint. (Optional: Add a coat of varnish or shellac, to keep it in tip-top shape for longer.)
