more kids, less sleep

Parents get fewer minutes of shut-eye than people without children. That seems about right. But how much less sleep do we get? According to a 2005 study released in April by Statistics Canada, Canadians with no children in the household got, on average, eight hours and 18 minutes of sleep. Those with one child had 17 minutes’ less sleep, while parents with at least two children had 25 minutes’ less sleep each day.

“I may get eight hours of sleep a night, but it’s broken up by someone getting up to pee or needing a drink of water. When I travel for business, I’m amazed to experience a full night’s sleep that doesn’t have me waking up every two hours and looking at the clock. It is incredible to actually fall asleep and wake up refreshed, rested and totally ready to go. I really, really miss that.”
Conrad Pilote, dad of Cameron, 4, and Sam, 2, Montreal
