Hair brushing at our house is an operatic affair. My 5-year-old hates the hairbrush, and howls her way through grooming sessions. We’ve kept her hair short-ish to cut down on daily drama. She wants her hair longer, but doesn’t want the work that goes with it.
Which is why I recently shelled out $15 for the Knot Genie, a plastic hairbrush that promised to make our morning tangle sessions a thing of the past.
I was already in a kids-only salon where my darlings sat out their cuts in cute cars and went home bedecked with rings and new barrettes. In for a dollar, in for another $15, I say.
We are converted. The blob-shaped brush is light and easy for her little hands to grip, and the two-tiered flexible plastic bristles detangle her hair without pulling too hard. I tried it on myself, and it felt a bit like a soft baby brush.
My daughter’s hair is straight and shoulder length, so I’m not sure how the brush would work with very curly or super-long hair. Knot Genie’s spokeskid has super-curly locks, and I don’t see tears in her eyes.
I don’t know if it’s a control thing, placebo effect, or that the brush really works better than a standard paddle brush, but my big kid is actually volunteering to brush her own hair, and she’s going out the door tangle-free (and scream-free) every day.
Wonder how I’ll use my next wish…
