Soon-to-be parents have developed some pretty unique methods over the years to determine what (and how) they will name their baby. If you’re a bookworm, for example, you might choose the name of your favourite fictional character. If you’re Selma Blair, you make the decision while considering the physical attractiveness of your baby-to-be. And if you’re any other celebrity, well, you name your kid after the first bizarre word that comes to mind. We’re looking at you, Jason Lee.
Or, if you’re like Megan and Luke Sims of Cornwall, Ontario, you use a hair-colour code system to name your new bundle of joy.
According to a report by the Toronto Star, the couple came up with a list of names that they both liked, and decided that the name of their daughter-to-be would come down to the colour of her hair when she was born—Adelaide if she was blond, Mila if she had dark hair, and Scarlet or Poppy if she was a redhead. In the event that their daughter was born with no hair at all, she would be named Pearl.
Megan admits that they were especially fond of the name Mila. She explains that the name (pronounced mee-la) is a variant of Milagros, which means “miracles” in Spanish.
“After two previous miscarriages and the fact that Luke and I have a love for all things Spanish—we spent our month-long honeymoon there in 2009—I really hoped for a dark-haired baby,” Megan told the Star.
Much to the family’s delight, their baby was born with “a full head of dark black hair” on October 5, 2011.
What method did you use to choose your baby’s name?
