Comedian Ricky Gervais took to the stage last night to host the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards and managed to poke fun at plenty of celebrities in the process, including new mom Natalie Portman. While introducing Portman, Gervais quipped, “Last year our next presenter won both the Golden Globe and the Oscar for her brilliant performance in Black Swan. This year, she took some time out to have a baby. Consequently, she’s been nominated for nothing… But she’s learned that valuable lesson that all [of] you already knew: never put family first!”
All jokes aside, some of the best moments of the night were inspired by family, from a funny duet by Felicity Huffman and husband William H. Macy to Peter Dinklage admitting he was nervous about his new daughter having her first babysitter for the evening during his acceptance speech for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in Game of Thrones.
But our favourite moment of the night had to be the oh-so-sweet acceptance speech by Michelle Williams, who snagged a Golden Globe for her role in My Week With Marilyn. “I consider myself a mother first and an actress second,” she said. “And so the person that I most want to thank is my daughter, my little girl, whose bravery and exuberance is the example that I take with me in my work and in my life. And I want to say thank you for sending me off to this job every day with a hug and kiss—I couldn’t have done it otherwise—and for making me so excited to come home at night.”
Between that speech and the cutest dog ever, we’re happy to overlook the total awkwardness of Jimmy Fallon’s “moves like Jagger.”
