Chariot Carriers: A Stroller for All Seasons

Here in Saskatchewan, we are having the warmest winter we’ve had in a very long time. Whereas it is usually -30°C at this time of year, it was +8°C this past week. It’s incredible. I decided to walk my four-year-old to preschool this morning, but it ended up being a little cooler than I thought it would be. It was all right, though, because I have the best winter stroller for my nine-month-old: the Chariot.

Back when my 10-year-old was a baby, I worked at a bike shop. My boss gave me a Chariot to try and I fell in love instantly. I purchased one of my own and it is the only stroller I’ve used consistently through all three of my kids. The best part about it is that I’m able to use it year-round. It splashes through spring puddles, rolls through summer sand, crunches over fall leaves, and plows through winter snow. And it’s not just a stroller. It is also built for jogging, biking, hiking, and cross-country skiing. It is the ultimate outdoor child carrier.

Chariot Carriers is a Canadian company, born in Calgary, Alberta. I have personally worked with this company through the aforementioned bike shop, and they are great to deal with. Besides being Canadian, my favorite thing about the Chariot is that my child is fully encased in it. This is especially great for buggy weather, windy weather, and when he/she tries (and fails!) to chuck a toy on the ground for the 452nd time.

There are six carrier designs, most of which are available in a single or a double model. The single carriers can hold up to 75 lbs, the double up to 100 lbs. When my second daughter was born, my eldest was six and we were still using the Chariot for her. It was great when I wanted to go for a fast walk and not expect her to keep up, or when I wanted to use my bike (with the Chariot as a trailer) as transportation in the summer. When her younger sister was born, she loved to sit in the Chariot while holding her baby sister on her lap, using the walk as baby snuggle time. Chariot carries an infant insert—that we used and loved, especially since it was removable and therefore kept my baby sleeping after the walk was done—but my six-year-old preferred to hold her sister herself.

Winter, spring, summer, or fall, Chariot Carriers really does it all. What stroller tops your list for the best buggy?

UPDATE (12/01/12): Older models of the Chariot bicycle trailers and recent conversion kit hitch arms have been recalled. According to Health Canada, consumers should immediately stop using the recalled bicycle trailers and bicycle trailer conversion kits and contact Chariot Carriers for a free repair kit which the consumer can install. Contact Chariot at 1-800-262-8651 between 10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit their website. Find complete details from Health Canada.

Chariot Carriers, starting at $450, are available online or from a retailer in your area.
