Canada’s Top Baby Names of 2011

Back in July of this year, popular baby name website Nameberry released a list of the most-searched baby names of 2011. Not surprisingly, newsworthy names like Adele and Pippa were getting a lot of love.
Now that the year is officially winding down, we have a more accurate picture of Canada’s top baby names for 2011. For example, the Ontario government website announced that this year, the names Ethan and Olivia were the province’s most popular. Reporter Ian Vandaelle took a closer look at Canadian name trends for an article in The National Post. Some of his more interesting findings:
• “Old-fashioned” baby names are enjoying a resurgence, with Beatrice and Maude cracking the top 100 at #74 and #85, respectively.
• The name Nevaeh may not be popular with some people, but it’s popular enough that it made the Top 100 list for the first time this year, sitting at #93, nationally.
• 18 of the most popular names for girls begin with the letter “A.”

I always find it interesting to see this list of the top boys & girls names for babies. It`s cool how William shot up to the top this year after the Royal Wedding. I just laugh when I see a name like Navaeh, or “heaven” spelt backward. But hey at least that shows some creativity from the parents…
I’m not the least bit surprised Ethan is such a popular name. Anyone who knows my son, Ethan, (named 36 years ago) would want their baby boy to be just like him as a grown man! ;o)
