This entertaining 32-page picture book follows the nocturnal adventure of Burton—a young pipistrelle bat—as he accidentally leaves the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) Bat Cave and spends an evening seeing the sights of the museum. Your young ones can join Burton as he discovers galleries filled with dinosaur fossils, shiny gemstones and minerals, beautiful ball gowns and more!

“We’re very excited to launch the ROM’s first children’s book, inspired by the re-opening of the Museum’s Bat Cave, a perennial family favorite for over two decades, and guided by the ROM’s own Dr. Burton Lim, assistant curator of Mammalogy,” says Julian Siggers, vice president of program and content communications at the ROM, in a press release. “Burton & Isabelle Pipistrelle gives young readers and their families the opportunity to take the ROM experience home and re-live these educational and fun adventures with every read.”

Burton & Isabelle Pipistrelle: Out of the Bat Cave, $20, Royal Ontario Museum Press. Available at the ROM Museum Store and amazon.ca.

My favorite museum exhibit has to be the dinosaurs at the Museum of Nature in Ottawa. I have loved them since I was a little kid. The museum also has a live honeybee colony inside a glass case in the museum, which is a close second. I always loved trying to find the queen bee inside the colony.

My favourite exhibit was King Tut’s in Toronto. I live in Ottawa & was 4 months pregnant at the time. I took the train down with my sister & we had a fabulous trip. The exhibit was everything I’d dreamed of & more. There was ancient Egyptian jewelry, mummies, amulets, canopic jars & statues. It was a moment I’ll never forget!

I love the replica of the stern of Captain George Vancouver’s ship the HMS Discovery which is in the Royal BC Museum in Victoria. I went there as a child in grade 5 on a field trip and it is still the same today. Great memories!
