We’re all used to Oscar and Big Bird and Cookie Monster, but of course, our favourite Sesame Street characters are a little bit modified for the various versions of the show produced around the world.
In Israel, for example, Oscar the Grouch is replaced by Moishe Oofnik, who doesn’t live in a garbage can, because Israeli kids have to be concerned about explosive devices in garbage cans (!!). And in Nigeria, there’s a Yam Monster instead of a Cookie Monster. Because most kids don’t have access to cookies, a cookie-hungry monster just wouldn’t make any sense. And Mexico’s Big Bird is actually a Big Parrot!
