While you’re probably quite familiar with October’s breast cancer awareness campaign, how much do you know about Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month in September? It may not receive as much national attention, but make no mistake—ovarian cancer is a serious women’s health issue that needs to be discussed by women all across Canada.

According to the Ovarian Cancer Canada website, “Over 2,600 Canadian women are diagnosed [with ovarian cancer] every year; and every year 1,750 women succumb to this disease.” The good news is that if ovarian cancer is detected and treated early, there is a 90% survival rate. Unfortunately, there is currently no early detection screening test for ovarian cancer—and that’s why knowledge about this disease is so important. You can learn more about the disease online and talk to your healthcare provider about risk factors during a regular check-up.

During the month of September, Ovarian Cancer Canada will be teaming up with grocery stores across the country to raise awareness about this disease. Through the purchase of sunflowers—the symbol of Ovarian Cancer Canada—you will help to support research efforts to put an end to ovarian cancer. Participating stores include IGA and IGA Marketplace locations in B.C., Longos locations throughout the GTA, and Sobeys locations in the Atlantic provinces (from September 9th through 16th). You can also get involved with the Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope on September 11, 2011.
