Road Trip Sanity Saver: The Folding Potty Seat

There’s really nothing fun about changing diapers. It’s messy, it’s annoying, it’s pretty gross. But, I will admit, there were a few times that I wished my potty-trained children were still in diapers—on road trips.

See, here’s the thing about diapers: They might be a nuisance, but when you are on the road, you can easily pull over, change the diaper, dispose of the waste, and move on. With a potty-trained child, however, using the bathroom on a road trip can be a very tricky situation. There is really nothing easy about it. There’s nothing quite like hearing the urgent cry of, “Mommy! I need to go potty NOW!” Children’s bodies aren’t exactly designed to think ahead to use the clean bathroom now, because there may not be a convenient rest stop ahead. Children don’t understand the concept of checking your clean bathroom app on your phone. No, their bodies tell them that they need to go that very moment so you had better find the nearest—probably dirty and unsanitary—place to go.

And I have three children, so road trips are three times the fun.

Enter the folding potty seat.

I am telling you, this might save your life, or at least your sanity. They are portable and small enough to fold up and throw in a diaper bag. And when you’re worried enough about your children touching the floors, the walls and the taps in the dreaded public bathroom, you can rest assured that at least their little heineys will not have to wait for you to cover the seat with 100 pieces of carefully ripped toilet paper. You can unfold the seat and pop it on top of the public toilet in no time at all. It truly is a thing of beauty.

Folding potty seats can be found in many different shapes and sizes, with different characters and at various price points. My favourite is The Cushie Traveller (available at toysrus.ca, $15).

What’s your must-have item for a family road trip?
