Poll: Does Your Child Have Too Little Homework or Too Much?

Last year my daughter was in Grade 1. Before she started I had a few parents warn me that her teacher was notorious for the amount of homework he assigned. They weren’t kidding. My girl had worksheets to complete almost every night. She was less than keen to finish them and I was miffed to hear how the other Grade 1 class only had spelling words to study. That’s it. On the flip side, one of the moms who had a child in that class was worried her son wasn’t getting enough homework.

I don’t know much about the teacher my daughter will have in September but I am hoping the work that she does send home is more enriching and less, well, busy work. How do you feel about homework, especially for kids in the younger grades?

My child is in school over six hours a day and when she comes home, that is family/extra-curricular activity time. I believe the social/life lessons she learns outside of school in the evenings are equally important. I am not happy about having to share our limited family time or already rushed activity schedule with homework expectations.

I often hear,” it is ONLY 20 or 30 mins” but it takes a great deal of time to prepare and structure ‘homework time’ amidst parents working schedules, errands, supper time, scheduled extra-curricular activities, and family time.

Teachers should attempt to instruct child how to complete assignments and study during the school hours (which is half of children’s waking hours)because when these children grow up, they may have jobs, families, and other responsibilities while still in school. Time management is an equally important skill.
