Confession: We still get a little excited when we hear the familiar sounds of the ice cream truck rolling through our neighbourhood in the summer. The downside? All that soft serve can make a pretty hard dent in our wallets. Thankfully, we now have a great way to make our own budget-friendly ice cream treat at home—no expensive ice-cream maker necessary.

This oh-so-fun recipe was shared by Christina over on her site, 2 Little Hooligans. It’s a great project for a hot summer afternoon and couldn’t be more kid-friendly. With just a few simple ingredients and household items, you’ll have a bag of homemade soft serve that’s as fun to make as it is to eat!

What you’ll need:
• Sugar
• Half & half (or light cream)
• Vanilla extract
• Coarse salt or table salt
• Ice
• Ziploc bags (one small, one large)

You’ll find the full instructions for making homemade ice cream in a bag over at 2 Little Hooligans. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, try adding some flavouring into the mix in the form of fruit juice or chocolate syrup to suit your kids’ tastes. We guarantee that playing with your food has never been so much fun—or delicious.
