Are Jessica Alba’s Post-Baby Weight-Loss Plans Unhealthy?

It’s no secret that as most women near the end of their pregnancies they start to think about the weight they have gained and how (and if) it’s going to come off. Some women are blessed with the gift of genetics and are back in their pre-pregnancy clothing within weeks of giving birth. Most women, though, have a bigger struggle ahead of them that may include dieting and exercise. Jessica Alba, who is currently pregnant with her second baby, seems to fall into the second category.

According to US magazine, the actress is quoted in the September issue of Lucky as saying: “I have a hard time with portion control, so I have 1,200 calorie meals delivered. But I also work out, so basically I’m starving. It sucks. I drink a lot of water.”

It is somewhat refreshing that Alba, unlike many new moms in Hollywood, is not out spreading the message that she doesn’t do anything to lose the weight. Instead, she is open and honest about the fact that she has to work at it. But her choice of words sends up a giant red flag: “Basically, I’m starving.”

We have to hope that Alba is, in fact, not planning to breastfeed while eating a mere 1,200 calories and working out daily. We also hope that “basically starving” was simply a poor choice of words. But Jessica Alba—a public figure, giving a public interview—should know better. Whether or not she’s planning to actually starve herself, or simply put herself on a healthy (though strict) regimen of portion-controlled meals mixed with a healthy dose of appropriate post-partum exercise, telling a magazine that she is “basically starving” to lose weight is a terrible idea because it accomplishes two things: first, it leads people to speculate whether Jessica may be going too far to lose her post-baby weight and second, it may lead people to think that it’s okay for them to go too far to lose their post-baby weight. Celebrities or not, we worry for the women who may read this article and think that extreme dieting and exercise is a healthy weight-loss option after having a baby.

Are we being too hard on Jessica Alba for her comments? Do you think that non-celebrity moms would go to such extremes to lose weight after having a child?
