There’s no arguing that kids grow like (adorable) little weeds, burning through their wardrobe like no tomorrow. One day you’re leaving the mall with bag after bag of new clothes and then before you know it, you’ve got baskets full of too-small shirts and too-short pants, waiting to find a new home. While we’re all for clothing swaps and hand-me-downs, when it comes to that stack of old t-shirts, there’s another option: have your kids turn them into fabulous summer accessories.

We came across this brilliant (and easy!) craft idea over on The Green Eyed Monster, a site that focuses on DIY fashion and sustainable living, founded by sisters Ash and Kimmy. Their latest DIY fashion project? Fun, fashionable necklaces made from cut up old shirts.

What you’ll need
• Old t-shirts
• Scissors

That’s it! Just two materials, plus your fingers. Smaller kids will need help from a grown-up to cut their t-shirts into strips, but older crafters can do this project all on their own. The full instructions for making a t-shirt necklace are on the Green Eyed Monster blog, Monster Bites, complete with step-by-step photos so you can see the weaving process in action.

Kids can take this craft a step further and try weaving bracelets or belts — whatever their little fashionista hearts desire. And with a project this cute, you may just want to make one for yourself, too.
