If you’re doing a bit of spring cleaning this weekend, consider taking a good hard look at all your old baby gear. Is it falling apart? Missing pieces? If so, it may be time for a trade in.

Starting today and running until May 15, Toys “R” Us and Babies “R” Us stores across Canada will be accepting used, potentially harmful baby items—think cribs, car seats and strollers—and offering a 20 percent discount on newer versions of the products.

Toys “R” Us began its “Great Trade-In” event last year, collecting around 7,500 products that were either in shabby condition, or simply would not meet new Canadian safety standards. With all of the product recalls on baby products over the last year, we’re not surprised that the number is so high.

Don’t be too quick to throw out every gently used item you own, though! If you’ve been hanging on to old items for future use, just be sure to check them against Health Canada’s list of recalled products to ensure they meet safety regulations. And if you’re planning to peruse second-hand stores or accept used items from friends for a new baby, Health Canada has some safety tips for second hand products and garage sales, too.
