This past weekend marked the debut of the new summer flick The Hangover, which has been getting a lot of buzz for its raunchy humour and hilarious antics. The film features four friends who head to Las Vegas for a crazy bachelor party weekend of debauchery. Although they vow to have a night they’ll never forget, by the time morning rolls around, no one seems to remember what happened the night before. What they do know is that the groom has gone missing, and a baby that doesn’t belong to any of them has somehow made it into their hotel room. And thus, hilarity ensues.
We’re not sure when it became so funny to depict scenarios of men being absolutely useless when it comes to childcare, but it does seem to be a trend (think Knocked Up and Big Daddy for more examples). A recent article on Jezebel.com explores the trend, noting that the same scenarios would likely not get the same laughs if a movie like The Hangover featured a bunch of women. Yes, women are naturally maternal and nurturing, but men? Not possible. Not in 2009 anyway… right?
While we think that the idea of men being horribly unfit to care for children is grossly unfair to all the great dads out there, we also have to admit that some of it can be pretty entertaining. Need proof? Check out the clip below.
